1. OK, so there are 2 things on this list that should have been posted on last week's Friday Favorites.  But we were camping in Goblin Valley on Friday so I didn't get around to posting.  Which is my #1.  Camping in Goblin Valley last week was AWESOME!  We went with our neighbors, the Cowarts, and it was probably our best camping trip ever.  One of the reasons it was so great was because of the company.  Another reason is because our kids slept so well.  Usually they keep us up all night but this time, they slept pretty much as well as they do at home.  The weather was pretty much perfect until the thunderstorm that began just as we were leaving.  But the best part was the location.  Goblin Valley is a very unique place and the kids really enjoyed climbing around on all the cool rock formations. There was lots of sand to play with and tons of neat nooks and crannies, including an awesome cave.

2. And my second thing that I should have posted last week ... we are having a baby and IT'S A BOY!

3. On to this week: We did the story of The Anxious Leaf in Kindergarten this week. Introducing a new story to the kids is always the highlight of my day.  This story was an experiment, since it is so much simpler than the other stories I have told, yet has a much more serious tone.  The boys really took to it, though, and it opened their eyes to the autumn happening all around them.  Our Kindergarten walks were transformed as the boys looked for the most vibrantly colored and intact leaves they could find.

4. For that matter, the wonderful fall weather should probably make my list of favorites this week.  We bust out our sweaters during the early morning hours and then later in the day enjoy a break from the blistering heat we used to experience on our outings.

5. I gave the boys some desperately needed haircuts.

6.  Jalapeno peppers.  This baby is practically made out of them.  They were on sale for 48 cents a pound at WinCo and so I bought pounds and pounds of them.  Our nieghbors gave us an awesome recipe for jalapeno poppers and I have eaten them 5 days out of the past 6.  Some of them have been burn-my-face off spicy but the others have totally been worth the risk.  I think I am coming to the end of my jalapeno craze, though, which is too bad because I still have 2 pounds left.

7.  I think Scott is going to get a job offer next week.  More on this exciting news next Friday.

8. Also news for Scott: my harp student and her mother read his novel this week.  They knew nothing about it and their feedback was really positive.  It is exciting to see other people reading and enjoying my husband's writing, which I think will be published on Kindle by the end of the month.

9. Soren is, apparently, actually teaching himself Japanese.  Scott had some time recently to talk with him about the syllabaries and found that he has complete command of one of Japanese's three syllabaries.  And he has a small vocabulary as well.  When we went to the library on Wednesday this week, he checked out some of the books they have there that are in Japanese and has been enjoying sounding out the words to himself during rest time.  He never ceases to amaze me.

Boy #3. So happy for you. I can't believe how smart Soren is. Well, I guess I can. Look at who his parents are. So good to hear from you.

Our Potty Training Journey

February 2010 GOAL:  My initial goal was to introduce Soren to the toilet and make it a fun place to sit.  I have to admit that I also hoped that we would have some fortunate "accidents" that would lead to potty training success. STRATEGY:  My plan was to sit Soren on the toilet once a day and read him a couple of stories.  If he peed, I was planning to give him a candy. THE BAD NEWS:  The candy totally backfired.  The one time that he peed on the toilet, I gave him a candy and he had a full-on tantrum begging for more.  If I ever told him "When you pee on the potty, you can have a candy", he would begin screaming for the treat and be unable to focus on the toilet training. THE GOOD NEWS:  Soren was not afraid of sitting on the big toilet.  He actually really enjoyed it (when I was reading stories and not pimping rewards) and started asking to sit there any time his butt was bare. J June 2010 GOAL:  My goal was to potty train Soren within the month of June

Cake for Breakfast!

I was getting dressed when it suddenly got very quiet out in the living room. Soren had been contentedly babbling a moment ago and now it was silent. I'm sure you can imagine me, rushing half-panted down the hall, hoping nothing horrible had happened. At our last visit, my pediatrician filled my mind with horror stories of infant death; now gruesome scenes were flipping through my mind like a slide show on speed. Or like the scary tunnel in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". Expecting a disaster, I was relieved when this was what I saw in the living room: The night before, I'd left a slice of left-over cake on the arm chair. We'd had company and Soren had been in bed. When I'd forgotten it at the end of the evening, it had been far from my son's greedy grasp. But this morning, when it was still left behind, it was within easy baby reach and too unusual for him not to explore. No wonder he was so quiet! He'd been experimenting with an unk

Milestone: New Syllable

This feels like such a silly thing to report about but it's got me tickled pink. Today Soren learned, what I feel, is the most important of all the English syllables: "ma". And it's about time. After months and months of hearing nothing but "da da da da" all day long, it's a refreshing change. I'm pretty sure that "da da" and "ma ma" don't correlate to anything in his mind yet. Still, he's that much closer to calling me his "mama" and I can't say the approximations don't warm my heart.
